The Community Health Nurse (CHN) assists clients in promotion, protection and restoration of health, to educate about, prevent and reduce the incidence of disease, disability and death. The CHN provides a comprehensive community health service in conjunction with the health care team and works within the context of Primary Health care to improve the capacity of clients to adapt to, respond to or control, life’s challenges, and changes.

Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent, with one year of experience in an acute care clinical setting and/or other equivalencies or related experiences in increasingly diverse settings such as community health centres, schools, street clinics, youth centres, and nursing outposts, and with diverse partners, to meet the health needs of specific populations. The Community Health Nurse must have basic CPR with annual re-certification. Candidates must be eligible to register prior to start date with the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN) with annual re-certification. Possession of one or more of the following at time of hire would be preferable, with the remainder (as directed) completed within first 12 months in the role and then as required in order to maintain certification: Advanced Cardiac Life Support(ACLS), Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), fetal monitoring, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Care (ENPC) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), ALARM/ESW/FHS, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, ASIST or Mental Health First Aid. Assets include the following: EKG interpretation, Critical Incident Stress Management, Pelvic Examination Training, Cross Cultural Training, Specialized Nursing Certificates.

Possession of WHIMS training and current Immunization Certification or willingness to complete within one month of hire is also a requirement for this position. Graduates from the Nunavut Arctic College Nursing Program, who passed the NCLEX exam, and are enrolled in Nunavut’s Graduate Nursing Residency Program will also be considered. Candidates must be eligible to register with CANNN. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license.

Reporting to the Director Health Programs; the Supervisor Health Programs (SHP) provides leadership, direction, and support to all Health Centre employees. The SHP works with Community Health Nurses (CHNs), community health representatives and other health care professionals to provide health services to all community clients in accordance with established standards of nursing practice and the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Health. Incumbents who are hired as Nurse Practitioners (NPs) will provide clinical support and guidance to CHNs and our health care team in keeping with their education preparation and NPs scope of practice.

This is the senior position in the health centre, which has responsibility for managing and providing direct clinical and administrative supervision and training for CHNs and support staff. The SHP manages a significant budget during each fiscal year for the provision of comprehensive health services in the community. Operating within a defined budget, the SHP is required to use sound judgement in allocating funds in the most appropriate manner. The SHP supports the provision of quality community health programming.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are typically acquired through a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma along with five (5) years of nursing experience with a minimum of one (1) year of northern nursing, and two (2) years supervisory experience. You must be licensed and in good standing with CANNN. NPs must have completed a Primary Health Care NP or Adult/Family All-Ages certification. First Aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support certification with annual renewal is also essential.

Possession of one or more of the following is considered an asset: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Advances in Labor and Risk Management, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course and/or Trauma Nursing Core Course.

Reporting to the Territorial Health Education Manager, the Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for promoting quality, culturally safe nursing practice, continuous quality improvement initiatives, optimal health outcomes and positive patient health care experiences. This position plays a critical role in promoting quality nursing services by assisting nurses to acquire the professional competencies required to succeed in their nursing role. The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for assessing competencies, designing learning plans, supporting professional development activities, coordinating, and delivering orientation, education, and training sessions for Nurses working in a variety of roles throughout Nunavut.

The Clinical Nurse Educator promotes equitable health care services throughout the territory by ensuring high clinical standards are met by nurses delivering those services. In this role, along with the nursing education team, you have the ability to increase patient satisfaction, increase public confidence in the health care system, and impact the health and well-being of Nunavummiut through the development and maintenance of a competent nursing workforce.

Candidates must be eligible to register with CANNN.
